Implants are a fixed, long-term way to replace missing teeth. Here is what the process usually looks like.
Assessment and planning
An examination, medical history and X-rays, plus a 3D scan if needed. You should hear about every option, including bridges and dentures, with risks, benefits and costs.
Getting your mouth ready
Gum disease or decay is treated first. If there is not enough bone, a graft may be recommended, which adds time.
Placing the implant
Done under local anaesthetic. Expect some swelling and soreness for a few days.
Healing
Usually two to four months while the implant fuses with the bone. A temporary tooth can often be provided so you are not left with a gap at the front.
Your new tooth
A custom crown is made to match your other teeth and fitted onto the implant.
Looking after implants
- Brush twice daily and clean around the implant every day
- Keep regular check-ups and hygiene visits
- Stopping smoking greatly reduces the risk of problems
